6. British sympathy for “little” Belgium The cartoon is referring to the decision by Belgium to resist the German invasion, which took place as part of the Schlieffen Plan in August 1914. Britain actually declared war on Germany on 4 August, the same day that German forces marched into Belgium. The cartoon portrays Belgium as a threatened child, and the stereotyped figure of Germany, as an aggressive military man with sausages. This cartoon was published in Punch magazine in August 1914. The cartoonist is F H Townshend. Punch was a very popular journal, which commented on important issues. It was famous for its cartoons.
