2 What is a noun? A noun is a word that names a person, a place, a thing, or an idea Examples Person – actor, President Obama Place- state, Arizona Thing – bird, Baltimore oriole Idea – holiday, Veterans Day

3 Singular and Plural Nouns
A singular noun names one person, place, thing or idea. A plural noun names more than one person, place, thing, or idea. Examples Many families have a picnic on the Fourth of July. Families is a plural noun. Picnic is a singular noun.

4 Common and Proper Nouns
A proper noun names a specific person, place, thing, or idea Examples President Obama - a specific person Arizona - a specific place Baltimore Oriole - a specific thing Veterans Day – a specific idea A common noun is any noun that does not name a specific person, place, thing, or idea actor state bird holiday

5 Concrete and Abstract Nouns
Nouns can be concrete or abstract. A concrete noun names a thing that can be touched or seen. An abstract noun names something that you think about but cannot see or touch. Concrete clown card school heart Abstract happiness February education love

6 Specific Nouns Specific nouns help writers create clear images or word pictures for their readers. When a writer uses specific nouns, the reader gets clear picture of people, places, things and ideas. General sandwich animal pants emotion car Specific hamburger bear blue jeans sadness convertible

7 Collective Nouns Collective nouns names a collection or group of persons, animals, or things persons class family audience committee team animals herd flock pack school pod

8 Compound Noun A compound noun is made up of two or more words Examples
football (written as one word) high school (written as two words) brother-in-law (three words hyphenated)

9 Nouns can take on different roles in a sentence
Roles of Nouns in Sentences Nouns can take on different roles in a sentence Subject Noun- A noun that is the subject of a sentence. The noun does something or is talked about in the sentence. Example The roots of rap cam be traced back to West Africa and Jamaica. Object Noun – a noun that is used as the direct object, the indirect object, or the object of a preposition. Some rappers tell people their story about life in the city. (indirect object: people; direct object: story)

10 Roles of Nouns in Sentences
Possessive Noun- A possessive noun shows ownership Early rap had a drummer’s beat. The rapper’s words are set to music. Predicate Noun – A noun that follows a form of the verb be (am, is, are, was, were, being, been) and renames the subject In the 1970s, rap was a street art. Mr. Smith is a doctor.
