15 Matched Funding scheme in UK Two government interventions: 2006 (capacity building) and 2008-2011 (Matched Funding scheme) Aims: step change in philanthropy for higher education To incentivise more voluntary giving to HEIs It’s a legitimate activity: institutions are exempt charities To promote a culture of giving (and asking) beyond the lifetime of the scheme Focused on middle band of HEIs Investment: £200m + £10m = significant sums
