Damage Control References Lesson topic 1.3 ( So where are all the manuals for this stuff?)

Enabling Objectives ¶Discuss the use of damage control books and isometric damage control diagrams to aid in countermeasures during a casualty ·Select the purpose and contents of damage control books and damage control isometric diagrams to aid on countermeasures during a casualty

zContents yPart I: General Information yPart II: DC Systems and stability data yPart III: Miscellaneous Systems yPart IV: Electrical Systems Damage Control Books

zIssued by NAVSEA. Shall NOT be transferred without NAVSEA authority zSupplied to yFleet Commander yForce Commanders yDivision Commanders ySquadron Commanders yCommanding officers yOther Naval activities as required

Three Dimensional Isometric Damage Control Diagrams zFurnished to ships in one of two types yColor-coded (Lithograph), to all combatants and certain large auxiliary ships yHalf-tone reproductions (black and white), for ships such as AE's, AD's, LST's & other auxiliary & miscellaneous ships yTotal of 15 DC Plates xMay be subdivided (4A, 4B, etc…)

Reading Damage Control Diagrams zA DC Plate is a diagram that illustrates ship compartmentation & systems zEach compartment is designated by yNumber & letter combination zThe various systems are designated by yColor, lettering, numbers & symbols

Reading Damage Control Diagrams WThe purpose of reading a DC Plate is to provide information to aid in countermeasures in the event of casualties zHeavy black lines indicate watertight/oiltight boundaries zThin black lines indicate airtight, fire retardant, fumetight, and non-tight boundaries zDotted lines/cross hatching/dashed lines indicate hidden boundaries, piping and valves

Reading Damage Control Diagrams zColor Coding for DC Plates yPink = Hazardous spaces yYellow = DC Repair Stations/DCC and radiation hazard areas yBlue = Decontamination Stations

Damage Control Diagrams zFlooding Effects and Liquid Loading (Plate 1) zThe purpose of the Flooding Effect portion is to show the effect of flooded compartments on the ships stability yIf green spaces are flooded, the stability is improved yIf pink spaces are flooded, the stability is decreased because of the added high weight, free surface effect, or combination of both

Damage Control Diagrams zFlooding Effects and Liquid Loading (cont..) yIf yellow spaces are completely filled stability is improved, but stability is impaired when free surface exists yIf the white spaces are flooded, there is no appreciable effect on the stability of the ship

Damage Control Diagrams zFlooding Effects and Liquid Loading (cont.) zIn the Liquid Loading part of this plate, the four numbers in the compartment represent yLeft upper, capacity in tons yLeft lower, change in draft AFT in inches yRight upper, list in degrees yRight lower, change in draft FWD in inches

Damage Control Diagrams zSubdivision Second Deck and below (Plate 2) and Subdivision Main Deck & above (Plate 3) yInformation obtained from these plates xcompartment numbers, names and frame numbers (total ship) yWhen combating casualties, these plates may be used to xSet up flooding, fire, smoke boundaries xPlot damage

Damage Control Diagrams zMain & Secondary Drainage & Clean Ballasting Systems (Plate 4A) yMain, secondary and miscellaneous systems zPlumbing, Gravity & Miscellaneous Drains, Sounding Tube Deck Plates & Sewage Disposal System (Plate 4B) yThis plate identifies installed systems so that drainage is accomplished quickly and effectively

Damage Control Diagrams zTank Stripping System (Plate 5) zFiremain Sprinkler, Foam, and Washdown System (Plate 6) zFuel Filling, Transfer and Overflow System (Plate 7) zJP-5 Filling, Transfer, Service Stripping & Overflow System (Plate 8) zVentilation Systems, Supply and Recirculating (Plate 9)

Damage Control Diagrams zVentilation System, Exhaust (Plate 10) zChilled Water System (Plate 11) zCompressed Air Systems (Plate 12) zCasualty Power and Communications (Plate 13) zVital DC Electrical Equipment and Power Supply Chart (Plate 14 A & B) zDC Communications Directory (DC Telephone Book, Plate 15)

zDC Books and Diagrams are classified CONFIDENTIAL zSHIPALT's and ORDALT's trigger an update zDocuments requiring updates yDC plates yMaster Damage Control book yMaster Compartment Check-off list yCCOL in compartment Handling and Updating for DC Books and Diagrams

zThree basic types of updates yDeletion yAddition yChange zMaster copies must be kept current, responsibility of the DCA zWhen a ship is decommissioned and scheduled for disposal and/or scrapping, Damage Control books shall be burned and their disposition reported to NAVSEA

Handling and Updating for DC Books and Diagrams zRevisions to master copy/ship's force copies are as follows yDeletions: Cross out in RED ink, NO ERASURES yUse proper color coding of the system, then circle affected area with RED ink yName changes can be made as marginal notes yRevisions to text and tables shall be made in black ink yNo changes shall be made to DC classifications without NAVSEA approval

RPL Notebook zTable of contents yNB 1-1 CONDITION II DC organization chart yNB 1-2 Repair party organization chart yNB 1-3 Alternate repair party mustering points yNB 2-1 Repair party and unit areas of responsibility yNB 2-2 Tanks and voids yNB 3-1 Electrical isolation list yNB 4-1 Fire fighting methods
