2. Immigration Vocabulary: Emigrate- to leave home
Ethnic Group- minorities that speak different language and have different customs
Steerage- cramped quarter on lower desk of boats
Sweatshop- dark, crowed work spaces
Assimilation-become apart of American Culture

3. Vocabulary Continue Tenement-building were several families lived
Slum- poor rundown neighborhoods
Suburb-residential areas outside of cities
The Gilded Age- time of extravagant wealth
Settlement Houses- provided medical care, playgrounds, nurseries, libraries, classes

4. New Way of Immigrates
Old Immigrates came from Northwest Europe; England, Ireland-Spoke English, similar customs/culture
New Immigrates came from Eastern & southern Europe; Greeks, Italians, Russians, Hungarians, Turks, Polish

5. Trouble blending in
New Immigrates left for American because of trouble at home. (religion, lack of $$)
Had a hard time blending in to society.
Many had different languages, religions (catholic/Jewish)

6. How they got to America
Journey across Atlantic ocean mainly as steerage. Entered through Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor and processed them at Ellis Island.
Asian Immigrates crossed Pacific Ocean entered in through Angle Island Ca.

7. Assimilation Many immigrants found work in sweatshops.
Many “old” immigrates mad at them for taking jobs.
Many wanted immigrates to assimilate into American culture instead of building ethnic communities.

8. Opposition to Immigrations
Nativists- opposed immigration and wanted to ban it.
Chinese Exclusion Act prohibited entrance into US for 10 years.
Immigration Act required a literacy test for citizenship

9. Contribution of Immigration
Supplied workers for economic growth
Shaped American life
Created major religious groups; Catholics, Jewish, Protestants
Helped factories and cities grow.

10. Gilded Age Progressive Movement
This movement started by wanted to educate immigrates which led to education for all and Public Schools.
Gilded Age a time of extreme wealth by railroad, Oil, Steel barons.

11. Growth of Cities Bigger population increased size of cities.
Needed more house, tenement living.
Growth of transportation lead to growth of suburbs by middle class.

12. Problems in Cities Rapid growth lead to overcrowding.
Tenement housing neighborhoods turned into slums.
Sanitation and garbage were a problem
Health concerns
Major Crime
YMCA/YWCA- created to help get youth off the streets.
Settlement Houses established- most famous, Hull House in Chicago

13. Look of Cities change Skyscrapers are built
Bridges were built like the Eads Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridges.

14. Modern times
This time period set the stage for American to move into the cities we know today.
