2 Although Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, a seaport town in Italy, he sailed under the flag of Spain. Columbus visited many of Europe's kings and queens asking for support before _____________________________________ finally agreed to pay for his famed voyage of exploration. From: Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus was born in the Italian seaport of Genoa in 1451, to a family of wool weavers. As a child he helped his father at the loom and then as a young lad went to sea. He became an experienced sailor and moved to Lisbon in Portugal to try and gain support for a new journey he was planning. He visited the courts of the kings and queens of Europe asking for help and money. Finally Ferdinand and Isabella, the king and queen of Spain, agreed to support him.

3 In 1492, Columbus set off West across the Atlantic Ocean in search of a new trade route to the Far East, or Asia, the source of valuable spices, silks, and luxuries. Columbus actually landed on an island in the Bahamas called __________, which he renamed _________________________. From: The First Trip: Columbus sailed for King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella of Spain. On his first trip, Columbus led an expedition with three ships, the Niña (captained by Vincente Yanez Pinzon), the Pinta (owned and captained by Martin Alonzo Pinzon), and the Santa Maria (captained by Columbus), and about 90 crew members. They set sail on Aug. 3, 1492 from Palos, Spain, and on October 11, 1492, spotted the Caribbean islands off southeastern North America. They landed on an island they called Guanahani, but Columbus later renamed it San Salvador. They were met by the local Taino Indians, many of whom were captured by Columbus' men and later sold into slavery. Columbus thought he had made it to Asia, and called this area the Indies, and called its inhabitants Indians.

4 Before steam power, ocean travel was slow and difficult
Before steam power, ocean travel was slow and difficult. The Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria sailed an average of only ____________ miles per day. From: Conditions on the Christopher Columbus ships would have been very basic. Food provisions would have included bread, beer, hard biscuits, fish and salted meat. The Captain would have had some private stores which might include wine Facts about Christopher Columbus Ships: How fast were the ships? The Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria probably covered a distance of about 100 miles per day The ships carried about 120 men in total There was a lack of proper sanitation Large ships would have carried a surgeon or doctor One of the worst health problems on board the three Christopher Columbus Ships would have been scurvy Fresh livestock included pigs and chickens were part of the ships provisions Meat would have been preserved by being salted Cooking was done in a fire box located on decks in the bow of the ship, Cooking pots or cauldrons would be suspended from a bar The seamen would sleep in cramped and damp conditions on the deck of the ships

5 After 34 days at sea, many sailors wanted to turn back
After 34 days at sea, many sailors wanted to turn back. They became _______________ and wanted to _______________ (which means to take over the ship). They thought the world was _________ and were afraid of _____________. Columbus convinced them to wait. The next day they saw _____________________ and knew land was nearby. From: The weather during the journey was pleasant, no major storms. By 10 October, after 34 days at sea, the sailors became hysterical and were ready to mutiny, many of them feeling that since the world was flat, at any moment they would fall off. Columbus convinced the mutineers to wait 3 more days. They very next day they saw tree branches in the water and realized that land was close.

6 When Columbus first came to what he called the New World, people had lived in the Americas for ___________________________ of years. From: www/ibiblio.org/expo/1492.ehibit/a-America/america.html Millions of people lived in an area some five times the size of Europe. In strikingly diverse habitats and climates they developed possibly the most varied and productive agriculture in the world. Their lifestyles and belief systems differed widely and they spoke hundreds of distinct languages. By 1492 people had lived in the Western Hemisphere for tens of thousands of years. For much of this time it is believed that they experienced virtually no recorded, sustained contact with other parts of the world -- Europe, Africa, or Asia.

7 Columbus and the Europeans who followed him brought new technologies, ideas, plants, and animals to the Americas. Name three. _________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ From: www/biblio.org/expo/1492.exhibit/e-Eur.claims.Amer/eur.claims.amer.html The Europeans brought technologies, ideas, plants, and animals that were new to America and would transform peoples' lives: guns, iron tools, and weapons; Christianity and Roman law; sugarcane and wheat; horses and cattle. They also carried diseases against which the Indian peoples had no defenses.

8 The information that Columbus wanted most was: Where is the gold?
The information that Columbus wanted most was: Where is the __________? From: Columbus wrote: "As soon as I arrived in the Indies, on the first Island which I found, I took some of the natives by force in order that they might learn and might give me information of whatever there is in these parts." The information that Columbus wanted most was: Where is the gold?
