ALL ABOUT DEMETER Demeter means “barley mother.” Another name for her is Ceres. Zeus was very fond of her. Demeter is the goddess of plants and harvest.

PERSEPHONE’S STORY Persephone is Demeter's daughter. Persephone was tending to her gardens. While tending to her gardens she was abducted by H ades. She was held in the underworld. I f you eat in the underworld you have to stay there forever. I n the underworld Persephone only ate six pomegranate seeds. Zeus decreed that she should stay there six months of the year. That is where we get seasons.

MORE ABOUT DEMETER Demeter’s children were Persephone, Dionysus, Despoena, Arion, Plutus, Philomelus, and Eubulus. Demeter is pictured as a mature motherly figure. Demeter is the goddess who taught mankind about agriculture. Demeter’s emblem is the poppy, a bright red flower that grows among the barley.

DEMETER Demeter was the “Corn Mother” who blessed the harvest. The attributes of Demeter are a bundle of grain, a scepter, a torch, and a sacrificial bowl. Demeter was the goddess of fertility, grain, and agriculture.
