11 Short Story Plan Character 1:Craig, 12 years old, a bit of a loner, timid. Wants to impress other boys so he can make friends. Character 2:Tom, 13 years old, popular, can be a show off. Secretly a bit of a coward, so picks on Craig. Setting:An old house. Everyone tells stories about it being haunted. Overgrown garden, boarded windows. An alleyway runs behind the garden. It is getting dark. Opening:Craig is walking home on his own. Bumps into Tom and his friends in the alleyway behind the house. Tom is telling the boys a story about his big brother going into the house the night before. He said there were strange noises and things moved about upstairs.

12 Short Story Plan Complication:Tom sees Craig listening to the story. He dares Craig to go into the house on his own. Craig is scared but wants Tom and his friends to be impressed. He decides to go in. Climbs over the wall nervously. Inside the house it is very dark and dusty. Craig hears noises upstairs and decides to investigate. He discovers a dog that has been trapped. Craig frees the dog and starts to take it out. Meanwhile Tom has snuck in to scare Craig. Ending:Craig hears Tom come in. He decides to trick him instead. He comes running down stairs holding the dog, yelling. Tom is terrified and runs away. When Craig comes out, the other boys are laughing at Tom and decide Craig is the bravest.

13 Completing a short story plan Complete a short story plan based on the illustration. You can use ideas from the work we have done so far. Makes sure these fit together. Don’t try to write the story – just include important details that would help you when you are writing.

14 Reviewing Writing - Planning Do we know a little about the charcater(s) and setting? Does the story have a clear structure? Do the opening, complication and ending fit well together?

15 Remember… Make sure that your plan tells the main details and ideas in the story. Make sure your opening, ending and complication fit well together. Don’t try to write the story in full! Use your plan to help you when you are writing.
