Lessons Aimed At Helping Saints Define, Describe, & Defeat Sin
3
Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3 The devil answers vv. 4-5 His entire motive…he wants the woman to “rationalize” (consider the enticement) He wants her to at least look at the tree in a different way DANGER !! Rom 13:14 Eph 4:27
4
Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3 The woman yields to temptation v. 6 She does precisely what Satan wanted… she listened to him and began looking at the tree differently No longer did she view it as forbidden Now it was appealing & desirable N.T. parallel passage Ù 1 Jn 2:15-17
5
Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3 The results of their sin v. 7 Upon eating the forbidden fruit, their eyes were opened…they were aware of their nakedness The truthful part of Satan’s lie They made efforts to cover themselves
6
Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3 The results of their sin v. 7 When sin occurs, humans will exhibit predictable behaviors We see it with the first couple If we’ll think about it, we will also see it in our own conduct
7
Typical Response To Sin Shame vv. 7, 8, 10 The “openness” of innocence contrasted with the shame of guilt Gen 2:25 3:7 Adam & Eve felt guilty…they tried to cover themselves They fearfully tried to hide from God…they knew He would not be pleased 3:8, 10
8
Typical Response To Sin Deflecting Guilt vv. 12-13 Quite often, the guilty looks for another to blame Adam blamed his wife…and even God Eve blamed the serpent While it is true others can lead us astray, we are still responsible Mt 18:6-7
9
Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3 God’s response vv. 8-24 He reacted on different levels…some things He wanted to do and other things He had to do Throughout it all, He was consistent
10
Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3 God’s response vv. 8-24 He inquired re: their whereabouts v. 9 Not because He was unaware Psa 139 He was reminding them of their accountability…they had to answer to Him for what they had done Heb 4:13
11
Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3 God’s response vv. 8-24 He directly questioned them vv. 11, 13 Not because He was unaware Psa 139 He was giving them an opportunity to “come clean” (repent) Instead of repenting, they chose to blame others
12
Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3 God’s response vv. 8-24 He punished vv. 14-19 He cursed the serpent beyond all other creatures…put him on his belly He increased the woman’s pain in childbirth…reminds her of her proper role re: her husband
13
Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3 God’s response vv. 8-24 He punished vv. 14-19 He increased the rigors of man’s labor… foretold his mortality…reminded him of his failure as a leader in his family
14
Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3 God’s response vv. 8-24 He enforced consequences vv. 22-24 The couple’s repentance is possibly implied vv. 20-21 However, a problem remained v. 22 God drove them out of the garden…hid the way to the Tree Of Life v. 24
15
Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3 God’s response vv. 8-24 He enforced consequences vv. 22-24 Sin’s most painful & lingering lesson It is all forgotten with God Heb 8:12 However, we can’t magically go back to “Square 1” as if it never happened re: situations in this life
16
Lesson 5 – The First Sin Gen 3 God’s response vv. 8-24 He enforced consequences vv. 22-24 The consequences of sin can and often do outlive the sin & our repentance This is why we cannot afford to listen to the devil and “rationalize” re: his enticements
17
