2.   1492 First European Nation to sail westwards across the Atlantic Ocean.  1825 Much of this empire had fallen.  Remaining  Cuba  Puerto Rico  Philippines Islands  Carolina Marshall  Mariana Islands in Micronesia Spain

3.   Considered the “Pearl” of the Spanish Empire  Beauty  Sugar Plantations  1868 Cuban Revolution began led by Carlos Manueld de Cespedes. Ended in 1878 after running out of resources.  Cuban Junta – organized by the Madrid gov’t.  Inactive in Spain  Unaware by gov’t but active in the U.S. Cuba

4.   Took great interest in the Cuban struggles.  Selling millions of newspapers for their stories.  Willam Randolph Hears was the leading jounalist  Conspiracy that he caused U.S.S. Maine to sink. Journalists

5.   Thousands of Cuban sent to concentration camps.  Those who failed got shot.  1898 third of Cuba's population were in camps.  400,000 died  Scarce food  Famine  Diseases Reconcentration Policy

6.   1898 – began their stand against Spain.  Revolution was led by Emilo Aguinaldo.  Later became leader of Kaitpunan  Defeated seveal Spanish forces  1899 Became presiden  Jose Rizal founded Liga Filipina -1892  Andres Bonifacio organized Katipunan – 1895 Philippines

7.   1897- became president  Did his best to avoid anything with Cuba  1898- Abandoned his diplomatic efforts and asked Congress to intervened in Cuba.  1897 – asked for donations for the Red Cross to help Cuba  Donated 5 thousand anonymously. William McKinley

8.   Feb. 15, 1898 it exploded  This was the climax of pre-war tension.  Many believe it was the Spanish doing.  Research suggest it was an accident  Spontaneous combustion in coal bunker  This was a significant even into the war. U.S.S. Maine

9.  On April 25, 1898 Congress declares war.  Continued into summer of 1899  Peace Protocal was signed on Aug. 12  Spain  United States  Next day Aug. 13  Dewey and Wesley unaware of the Peace Protocal attacked the Spanish forcing them to Surrender.
