AUTISM BY: ASHLEY LEDBETTER

Autism is a complex neurological disorder that affects one’s communication and socialization ability. Obvious signs of autism and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age. Autism effects socialization, sensory skills, and cognitive skills. Autism impacts every individual differently. Autism is the most common disorder.

There is no known single cause for autism, but it is generally accepted that it is caused by abnormalities in brain structure or function. Researchers have not yet identified a single "trigger" that causes autism to develop. Prevalence is estimated at 1 in 88 births. Only 56% of students with autism finish high school. Fastest-growing developmental disability; 1,148% growth rate.

Speech Issues- ranging from no speech, delayed speech to mimicking sounds Interaction Issues- lack of eye contact, unaware of others, parallel play, lack of imaginative play, treat people as objects Behavioral Issues- repetitive movements or gestures and behaviors Sensory Issues- dislike of certain tastes, sounds, and touches, unaware of some physical stimuli (pain)

Does not babble, point, or make meaningful gestures by 1 year of age Does not speak one word by 16 months Does not combine two words by 2 years Does not respond to name Loses language or social skills & seldom eye contact

Autism effects boys 3-4 times more than it effects girls. The exact number of children living with Autism is unknown. Family income, education, and lifestyle do not seem to affect the risk of autism.

Play Does Not Imitate Others. Prefers Solitary Play. Does not Pretend Play. Behavior Acts Up. Short Attention Span. Narrow Interest.

Communication Does not refer to self correctly Repeats words or memorize passages, such as commercials Develops language slowly Social Does not make friends. Does not play interactive games. Shows lack of empathy. May treat others as if they are objects.

The rise in students with Autism creates a definite need for awareness amongst educators. These same children will be part of our learning communities. We need to understand and be prepared with the knowledge and tools necessary to meet their needs.
