4 Element of Vocal variety: Pitch Range Intonation: The movement from sound to sound with an almost continuous rise and fall in pitch The overall pattern of pitch changes in phrases and sentences is described as intonation, speech melody or pitch contour

5 Pitch Key is the general pitch level ranging anywhere from high to low that is used at any given moment in talking or reading. High Medium Low

6 Pitch Inflection: Changing pitch within a single, uninterrupted sound is called an inflection Rising Falling Upward and the downward gliding of the voice

7 Pitch Step is a pitch change between words or syllables The voice leaps or springs from one pitch to another, either up or down. – Only one tone per word.

8 Stress and Emphasis Stress is the degree of prominence of a syllable within a word And also refers to the degree of prominence of a word within a phrase or sentence – for example it could be said louder or higher in pitch than adjacent words We stress words to make the meaning and feeling clear

9 Emphasis Emphasis is the degree of prominence given to a phrase or thought grouping. Example – more volume, higher pitch, or softer and lower.

10 Rate Rate include the speed at which a person speaks, the length, or duration of sounds, and the length and number of pauses

11 Pause A pause is a rest stop – a period of silence. A PHRASE is a group of related words expressing a thought or “sense” unit or an idea. Phrases are set off from each other with pauses – For breath, for clarity – For emphasis and emotional quality – A pause that refreshes – A dramatic pause is an understated way of bringing out meanings or emotional content
