No Enlightenment here Nicholas I and previous Tsars, ensured that the ideas of enlightenment would not spread to Russia. Where other countries failed, the Russian autocracy was successful in crushing opposition through exile and execution. Russia’s geographically large size, meant that it was difficult for ideas to spread, as peasants were isolated.
