What does it look like in Elementary?

 Look at the Progressions Sheet with your table mates…  How does the standard change at each level?  What would instruction look like at each level?

How can we find out why?

 How did we make it fair?  We used three cups all the same size.

 How did we make it fair?  We put the same amount of cotton wool in each cup

 How did we make it fair?  We put the same amount of seed in each cup.

 We put one cup in a light place with one spoon of water.

We put one cup in a light place with no water.

 We put one cup in a dark place with one spoon of water.

My Plant Observation Book Grade 3-5 Plant A Plant B Plant C If we grow seeds in two cups and give Plant A light only, Plant B water only, and Plant C both light and water, what will happen? Why do you think so? __________

Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on the idea that plant matter comes mostly from air and water, not from the soil.]

To make a Chia seed gel:  Three parts raw Chia seeds  One part water  Allow seed gel to sit for 10 minutes.  Apply gel to surface of water soaked cotton base.  Place in sunlight…..or in a dark closet!!!!

 Blue to graph Plant A  Red to graph Plant B  Yellow to graph Plant C  Observations…

 Describe the plant experiment using the data you collected in your observation journals. W  What do plants need in order to grow? Could they grow without soil?  Use evidence from the data you collected to support your opinion.

 Hydroponics is the method of gardening that does not use soil as a growing medium. Instead, plants are grown in water and nutrients are added to the water so that the plants get all the necessary elements and chemicals required for healthy growth.

 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive. [Clarification Statement: Examples of patterns could include that animals need to take in food but plants do not; the different kinds of food needed by different types of animals; the requirement of plants to have light; and, that all living things need water.] 

My Plant Observation Book Grade K-2 Plant APlant B If we put seeds in two cups and give Plant A water only and Plant B both light and water, what will happen? Why do you think so? __________

Describe the plant experiment using the data you collected. Turn and talk with your partner about your findings. Why is this important to know? With your partner, share with the class. You may choose how you want to share. (speech, poster, power pt., etc.)

How might this lesson be enhanced? Turn and talk at your table.
