The mountains and the seas kept the Greeks apart, and early Greek communities became fiercely independent.

Were not Greek, but lived in the region
Made their wealth from trade and controlled the eastern Mediterranean Sea in 2000 BC

They used the island trees to build ships that carried them all over the Mediterranean Seas.

Mycenaeans built the first Greek kingdom and spread their power across the Mediterranean region.
Life centered around the palace and people were skilled in different areas
Traded with Minoans and learned their culture

Mycenaeans traded with Egypt and Italy and may have conquered Crete

Trade slowed, poverty grew, written language and craftsmanship decreased

Not enough food, so people were sent out to colonize and culture spread

Colonies increased the demand for goods and specializations, which in turn led to the growth of industry.

11. The Polis
Similar to Mesopotamian city-states (small country with just one city)
Acropolis served as the center for religion and protection
Agora served as a market and meeting place
Many different sizes

12. Greek Citizenship
Members of political community who treat each other as equals and have rights
Greeks were the first to develop this idea
Only free native-born men who owned land in most city-states
Rights included meetings, choose officials, voting, hold office, pass laws, own property, and defend oneself in court

13. Greek Citizenship as soldiers
Hoplites: armies made of ordinary citizen soldiers
Fought on foot heavily armed
Carried round shield and 9 foot spear
Marched in long rows
Loyal to their city-state caused lack of unity between all Greek city-states
How did citizenship make the Greeks different from other ancient peoples?
Other ancient peoples were mostly subjects of kings and had little or no say in government.
