Life Life experiences of Kayla Lewis
3
My name is Kayla Lewis. I am a freshman at Western Michigan University. I am a nursing student and am on the Western Michigan Dance Team. My life has not been the most exciting one there is, but I have many goals for the future and have enjoyed my past. This is a short slide show to highlight my life and hopeful future.

I grew up in Monroe, Michigan. Monroe is a small town on the East side of the state- the kind that most people have never heard of before. When I was 8 years old my family moved to Grand Rapids, to live closer to relatives, and continues to live there today.

I have been fortunate enough to be blessed with a wonderful family. I have grown up with a mom and dad, still married and happily in love, as well as an older and younger sister who are my two best friends.

One of the best things about my family is that I have two cultures. My mom grew up in Chile, South America and moved to the US as a sophomore in high school. My dad grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan and is 75% Dutch. That makes me 50% Chilean, 25% Dutch, and 25% random. I have grown up learning from the quiet, musical, religious side of my dad’s family as well as the loud, bilingual, crazy side of my mom’s family. Most people don’t get to experience another culture as first hand as I have. Multi-Cultured

In high school, I was very involved with my school and my community. I was the captain of my high school varsity dance team both my Junior and Senior years. I danced outside of my school team at a dance studio and also student-taught and taught dance classes to younger girls. I volunteered within the community often and was voted on prom court my senior year. For me, high school couldn’t seem to get any better. But when graduation came around, I know I was ready to begin a new chapter in my life. High School Achievements

I have always been the type of person who plans things out, including my future, step by step. Lists are a daily essential for me, no matter what the occasion might be. Begin college career at WMU Get accepted into the Bronson School of Nursing Graduate with a Nursing Degree from Western Michigan University Specialize in Child Development Get a job as a Child Life Specialist in a Boston Hospital Get married Adopt a husky puppy Have lots of kids To be continued… 1. 3. 2. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Although I am currently a nursing school, I do not plan on being a nurse when I am older. Having a nursing degree allows me to have many options in which sort of department I want to work in. I hope to one day work as a Child Life Specialist, working in a hospital with terminally ill children. Child life specialists not only work with the kids, but also the doctors and the families to help the families and child cope with sickness. The job is a perfect balance between nursing, psychology and social work. Child Life Specialist Nursing Psychology Social Work

One of my greatest life achievements was making the WMU dance team. Ever since I was young, I could not imagine my dance career ending after high school. The day I made the team was one of the happiest days of my life, and a main reason why I decided to attend WMU. I’m looking forward to the months and years to come being on the WMU dance team. One of the Best Achievements

Balancing school and the dance team is one of the most challenging aspects of this year. Both are top priorities to me. Dance team consists of practice at 4 times a week, work outs 3 times a week, plus performing at any basketball, football or volleyball games there might be that week. Studying is just as time consuming, if not more. It is my personal goal to be successful in both school and dance throughout college.
