Department of Residence Life and Services 3 November 6, 2010 Important to know…  I do not have all the answers…but know a lot of information  We are not here to blame this issue on men…it is not their fault!  Sexual violence is not just a woman’s issue…it is a societal/cultural/social justice issue  Men and women need to work together as partners to combat this issue

Department of Residence Life and Services 4 November 6, 2010 Important to know…  Alcohol (or other drugs) are almost always a factor in assaults that occur on a college campus  In this presentation, we will primarily talk about perpetrators being men, with the caveat in place that we acknowledge men are victims of this crime.  Sexual violence is more often than not perpetrated by someone known to the victim in a location familiar to the perpetrator or victim

Department of Residence Life and Services 5 November 6, 2010 Think about this…  Research conducted by Dr. David Lisak (2002)  1,882 men with average age of 28  Employed, attending college (part time)  Representative of the diverse American culture  120 men committed 483 rapes of women  44 men committed a single act of rape  76 men committed 439 rapes (average of 6/individual)

Department of Residence Life and Services 13 November 6, 2010 Helpful Questions…  Help me understand why you talk about men/women that way?  I noticed you…why?  Relationship conversations…  I don’t appreciate the way you talk to me…please stop.  I don’t appreciate the way you are talking about my friend…  Please reconsider the way you talk about victims…they don’t ask to be victims  Tell me what you don’t find true about this poster…
