READ ALOUD : “At the Flick of a Switch”
GENRE: Poetry Rhyming poems contain a pattern. The rhyming pattern can be at the end of each line, at the end of every other line, or in a more complex pattern. Poets sometimes use onomatopoeia (sound words) to emphasize the sound that something makes. Onomatopoeia also adds a musical quality to poetry. Some poems have repeated words or patterns to emphasize the theme (poet’s message).

After first four stanzas: What sound does a washing machine make? What goes “grrrr”? How do these sounds fit each appliance? After the fifth stanza: The poet says “thingy-me- bob” instead of the name of the appliance. Turn to a partner and tell what this “thingy-me- bob” does. What could other “thingy-me-bobs” do?
