1 LI: To identify and use a thermometer as an accurate method of measuring temperature.
Steps to Success… Investigate room temperature in different parts of the room Discuss reasons for changes in room temperature Discuss own experiences of thermometers and use one with increasing accuracy Discuss reasons for us getting different readings Use your hands to test if an object is hot or cold and describe it Begin to use a thermometer

2 Make a prediction about what will happen
LI: To predict how and explain why the temperature of water changes over time. Steps to Success… Relate the changing temperature of water to an understanding of room temperature Make a prediction about what will happen Discuss what makes it a fair test Understand what happens to the temperature of water over a period of time

3 Before the investigation….
What is room temperature? What could cause different parts of the room to be different temperatures? Let’s do an investigation to find out if temperature changes over time

4 After the investigation…. Talk to a partner about these questions
What do you think will happen to the temperature of each beaker after an hour? Do you think this was a fair test? WHY? HOW?

5 Record the investigation
In your science books; Write the date and the learning intention LI: To predict and explain why the temperature of water changes over time Draw the apparatus 3. Write a prediction of what you think will happen to the temperature of each beaker after an hour – I predict that……… 4. Write a sentence – The test is fair/not fair because……. 5. Draw the table of results – use a ruler!

6 LI: I can talk about Thermal Insulators
Steps to Success… Identify materials that make good thermal insulators and suggest some uses for these Identify everyday uses of thermal insulators Be able to explain what a thermal insulator is

7 LI:I can talk about Thermal Insulators
Steps to Success… Recognise that some materials keep cold objects cold as well as warm objects warm Be able to talk about fair testing Make predictions about which material will be the best thermal insulator Collect evidence by taking part in an experiment and answer a question about it Say what you think will happen

8 What is a thermal insulator?
Talk Partners! What is a thermal insulator?

9 Rewind your mind……. Think back to our Antarctic Explorer and how we helped him choose 3 items of clothes to keep him as warm as possible. Last week we talked about carrying out an experiment to investigate the question; Is there a material that can keep cold objects cold AND at other times keep warm objects warm?

10 Think back to the list of materials that we thought we could test as thermal insulators
Polystyrene Newspaper Cotton Tin foil Tissue paper Bubble wrap Plastic bag Fabric Which material do you PREDICT will be the best thermal insulator - that will keep cold objects cold and warm objects warm?

11 Preparing for the investigation
Half the class are going to test which materials keep objects cold Half the class will test which materials keep objects warm First we need to decide which materials to test…..

12 Apparatus Each group will have 4 beakers with either ice cubes or warm water in them 3 of the beakers will have different materials wrapped around them 1 of the beakers will not have anything wrapped around it to act as a control

13 Points to consider How should the material cover the beaker – just the top or all around? How should the effectiveness of the thermal insulator be measured? - Number of whole ice cubes left? - Temperature of water? - Amount of water left (ml)? * How can we make this a fair test?

14 Before the investigation
On your sheets - write the learning intention and date and UNDERLINE them; I can talk about thermal insulators Write your prediction; I predict that ______________

15 After the investigation
Be able to say what the results show, draw simple conclusions and explain what you did (Level 2) Provide explanations for your observations and begin to conclude what you have found out from your work (Level 3)

16 Conclusions Well Done Scientists! On your sheets, write a conclusion;
The results show that ____________ was the best thermal insulator because ________________________________. Well Done Scientists!

17 LI: I can talk about Thermal Insulators
Steps to Success… Make predictions and explain why, using what you already know Understand which materials are good thermal and electrical conductors Make predictions about what will happen Say what you think will happen

18 What is a Thermal Insulator?
Let’s recap…

19 Thermal Insulators do not allow heat to pass through them

20 Talk to your partner…. What do you think a Thermal Conductor could be?

21 A Thermal Conductor DOES allow heat to travel through it

22 Quick Activity Write the LI and date in your science books and underline them; LI: I can talk about Thermal Insulators 7/10/09 2. Draw the apparatus that we will be using Wooden spoon Metal spoon Plastic spoon Hot water

23 Let’s feel what the spoons are like before we put the hot water in the beakers……

24 What should I do to make sure the test is fair?
Fair testing… What should I do to make sure the test is fair?

25 Predictions… What do you predict will happen to each spoon?
Why do you think that? Write your prediction in your science book; I predict that……………………………… because……

26 Investigation Time!

27 Results Write the results in your science book;
The……………spoon felt hot from the water because it is a thermal conductor – it allows heat to travel through it. The…………..spoons did not feel hot from the water because they are thermal insulators – they do not allow heat to travel through them. Metal Wooden Plastic
