2 Starter: what do you notice about this image?

3 Feeding 1. Amount which is on the spoon, fork. Why? 2. The speed in which each mouthful is being fed Why? 3. The type of language used by care worker towards service user. Why? 4. Serviette needed? Why? 5. What to look out for? Why? 6. Challenge yourself: What else?

4 Who might need support with eating? Infancy are ‘spoon fed’ (4 months +) Children who are ill and very weak in hospital (4-11) Adolescents who are experiencing eating disorders. Anorexia can trigger a ‘Cant be bothered’ to eat attitude and in severe cases will need spoon feeding (11-18) Neurological disease which can cause a swallowing defect. This can happen after a seizure/fit. Later adult hood (65+) stroke, dementia, mental health Disability which can affect any life stage. Such as, Spina bifida.

5 Practical task With the person next to you: One must wear a blind fold. You are the service user. You must assess how comfortable you feel with your partner who is the care worker: speed you are being fed, amount, language used. Swap roles Stick your assessment in your book!

6 Assessment If I have given you a green sticker please answer: Why is feeding considered a care value? Refer to abuse and neglect? If I have given you a pink sticker please answer: Why is it important to watch the throat area when feeding a patient? Now find a partner with the opposite colour to explain your answer. ( 2 mins)
