Warm Up The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is made up of which six states? In our local watershed, water from South Riding flows into ________ ________ which then flows into the __________ __________ and finally down to the _______________ __________. New York VirginiaWest Virginia PennsylvaniaMaryland Delaware Bull Run Potomac River Chesapeake Bay

How does your water get from these to this?

 Salinity: Vocabulary to KNOW Pieces of rock & soil carried along a stream or river The amount of dissolved salt in the water The cloudiness or haziness of a stream due to large amounts of floating or carried sediment  Sediment:  Turbidity:

Floating Egg Experiment  2 cups of cold water, a large glass jar, 4 tbsp. kosher salt, a spoon and a raw egg.  Pour 1 cup of the cold water into the large jar. Dissolve the kosher salt in the water by stirring it with a spoon  Pour 1 cup of the cold water into the large jar. Dissolve the kosher salt in the water by stirring it with a spoon  Pour the remaining cup of cold water gently into the glass jar and avoid disturbing the salt water as much as possible  Pour the remaining cup of cold water gently into the glass jar and avoid disturbing the salt water as much as possible  Slowly drop the raw egg into the water. The raw egg will sink through the plain water but will stop and float where the salt water begins.  Salt water is more dense than plain water, so it makes the egg float. Salinity Demo

 The amount of dissolved salt in the water What is salinity? Why is salinity important?  It tells us how much fresh water has mixed with salt water  It impacts the density of the water which determines how water will move  It impacts various chemical processes  It affects the biotic factors in an ecosystem

Sediment - When streams flow, they break down rocks and soil which are then carried along downstream. Runoff from nearby fields can also carry sediment into streams and rivers. Pieces of rock and soil carried along a stream or river Is anyone checking this water to see how dirty it really is?

Hydrographer s carry numerous glass bottles to obtain samples of the river. The brown water here indicates the presence of a lot of fine dirt particles (sediment), making the turbidity of this water is very high. turbidity Turbidity can also be caused by bacteria and algae!

What does turbidity tell us about the river?  How cloudy or clear the water is Turbidity What makes the water turbid?  Sediment, Bacteria and Algae!

Measuring the turbidity of a water source is one of several tests that help determine water quality

Water quality tells us whether the water we drink is CLEAN or POLLUTED!

Why should I care about water quality? Polluted water can make you sick or even kill you!

How can I find out if these are clean? TEST THEM!

Water Quality Scientists look at several factors to see if the water is healthy Dissolved Oxygen (DO) Nitrate pH Phosphate Temperature Turbidity

Water Quality Testing Lab Materials – Safety Goggles– Gloves– Water Sources – LaMotte Water Monitoring Kit Procedures: Follow the directions posted at each station. Use the correct equipment and handle all materials with caution. Once each test is complete, you may dispose of your chemical waste material down the sink with the faucet running.

Water Quality Testing Lab Check your results against the chart Record your results in the table

Water Quality Testing Lab You should have THREE sets of data! Type of Pollutant Dissolved Oxygen (DO)ppm Nitrateppm pH Phosphateppm Temperature°C TurbidityJTU

Water Quality Testing Lab Check out this video of students checking the water quality of the Potomac River!

Water Quality Testing Lab Answer the Analysis Questions using complete sentences! Turn in lab when complete!
