Salinity Experiment The Floating Egg Experiment For the floating egg experiment, gather together 2 cups of cold water, a large glass jar, 4 tbsp. kosher salt, a spoon and a raw egg. Pour 1 cup of the cold water into the large jar. Dissolve the kosher salt in the water by stirring it with a spoon. Pour the remaining cup of cold water gently into the glass jar and avoid disturbing the salt water as much as possible. Slowly drop the raw egg into the water. The raw egg will sink through the plain water but will stop and float where the salt water begins. Salt water is more dense than plain water, so it makes the egg float. The hydrographer carries numerous glass bottles, using one bottle for each cross-sectional location. The bottle is secured in the metal sampler and there is a tube in the front of the sampler to allow water to enter the bottle at a controlled rate, while letting out air from inside the bottle. The very brown water here indicates the presence of a lot of fine dirt particles and the turbidity of this water is very high.turbidity
