10. People have killed millions of whales in the last hundreds of years. In the past, whaling was an important business because people could make a lot of profit from whale meat, whale oil, whalebone, blubber, spermaceti, etc.

11. In the 19th century, whaling reached its top in history. Hundreds of whaling ships sailed in the ocean, searched for whales to hunt. Before petroleum had been widely used, whale oil was the most important for lubricating and lighting.

12. Although whaling had become less and less profitable because of the development of the petroleum industry, people still killed the most whales in the middle of the 20th century. In 1964, more than 60,000 whales got killed!
