First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) First major land battle of the Civil War. First battle where troops were rushed to the battle by train. Battle in which “Stonewall” Jackson received his nick name. Many civilians from Washington D.C. came out to watch the battle and made a picnic of it. Confederate victory

Battle of Shiloh The bloodiest day in U.S. until this point in history. They established battle line was referred to as the "Hornets Nest" Grant was caught off guard. Albert Sydney Johnston died in the battle from a wound to the leg. Union Victory

Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg) First major battle that took place on Union soil. Single bloodiest day in American History Convinced President Lincoln to deliver the Emancipation Proclamation. Battle lasted for 12 hours (5:30 am – 5:30pm) Battle was considered a draw. Goal was to convince Europe the confederacy was a legitimate country. Union Victory

Battle of Perryville Largest and last battle in Kentucky. Confederates had to retreat because of lack of supplies. President Lincoln thought if Kentucky left the Union that they would surely lose the war. Union Victory

Battle of Fredericksburg The first urban combat in the Civil War. This battle was fought in the streets of Fredericksburg. Was the beginning of a march on Richmond by the Union troops. (the first of many) Confederate victory

Battle of New Orleans Was a major city of importance because of the southern ports and was the mouth of the Mississippi. This battle assisted the union in gaining control over New Orleans and was able to take control of most of lower Mississippi. Adopted from Winfield Scott’s Anaconda plan to blockade and deprive the south of their resources. Union Victory

Battle of Hampton Roads (Iron Clads) First battle using Ironclad warships. The purpose of the battle was for the Union to blockade trade routes for the Confederate. This battle was a draw. The blockade of southern ports continued.

Battle of Gettysburg Bloodiest battle of the war Turning point in the war The last time the confederates will try to take a Northern city. Infamous “Pickett's Charge” on the last day of battle will be the deciding factor of the Winner. Union Victory Prompted President Lincoln to issue the Gettysburg Address a few months later.

The Battle of Vicksburg( Siege of Vicksburg) Major defensive stronghold of the Confederacy. Confederates lost most of the their soldiers to death or were captured. Split the south in half. Union Victory

The Battle of Chickamauga Union was working towards capturing Chattanooga, TN. There was a large Railroad hub in Chattanooga. If the union gained control of this railroad they would have access to the railroads in the part of the country and would be able to transport troops and supplies to the south. Later will lead to the Battle of Chattanooga. Large amount of casualties. Confederate Victory

The Battle of the Wilderness This battle was fought in the woods of Virginia. Fought more man on man than strategic maneuvers because of the venue of the battle. Inconclusive victory, both had to retreat.

Siege of Petersburg Lasted almost 10 month campaign. Petersburg was a major supply hub to the confederate army led. Grant and his men were on the road to capturing Richmond (CSA capital) which they had tried several times. Union victory
