 Many natural bays allow for harbors used for trade  Long Sea Coast  Mountains & Valleys  Allow for the development of fiercely independent city states or polis  Small populations give rise to political participation by commoners GEOGRAPHY OF ANCIENT GREECE

 Discovered by Sir Arthur Evans  Located on the Island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea  Enjoyed great prosperity due to extensive sea trade and commerce  Developed elaborate skills in art and architecture, visible in their great palaces MINOAN CIVILIZATION 2000-1450 BCE We talked a lot about how geography or location affected Egypt and Mesopotamia, how do you think the location of Crete affected the Minoans?

 Knossos was the capital city of the Minoan Empire  The palace housed rooms for the royal family, banquet halls, and working areas for artisans  The palace also had a number of shrines (areas dedicated in honor of different gods & goddesses) & frescoes (which are water color paintings done on wet plaster) ART IN KNOSSOS

 What does this image tell use about Minoan culture? FRESCOES

 Crazy thing about Minoan culture is that ALL of the gods (well goddesses) we have found evidence of have been female.  What is the significance of this compared to other ancient civilizations?  What is this mother goddess holding?  Minoans also worshiped Bulls – have you ever heard of bulls in religion before? RELIGIOUS SHRINES

 By 1400 BC something took out the Minoans, it could have been any of the following:  volcanic eruption  earthquake  invaders  What we do know is that a new civilization took their place, we call them the Mycenaeans MINOAN CIVILIZATION DISAPPEARS

 Conquered mainland Greece & Crete around 1400 BC & ruled until about 1200 BC  Kings were known by the title Wanax  The Mycenaeans were also great sea traders.  They lived in separate city-states & were ruled by a warrior king  Most famous for their part in the Trojan War MYCENAEAN CIVILIZATION
