4 Examples of Allusion: * Sally had a smile that rivaled that of the Mona Lisa. This is an example of an allusion because most people are familiar with the painting. from “Raymond’s Run” *”The kids call me Mercury because I’m the swiftest thing in the neighborhood. This is an example of an allusion because Mercury, according to Roman mythology, was a messenger of the gods and was known for his speediness.

5 Listen to The Raven read by James Earl Jones  Examples of Allusion: “Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door-” This is an example of an allusion because Pallas is another name for the Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena. “ Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!” This is an example of an allusion because Plutonian shore refers to Pluto, the Roman god of the dead. “ Is there balm in Gilead?-tell me-tell me, I implore!” This is an example of an allusion because the phrase “balm in Gilead” is used in the Bible to refer to a healing ointment made from a tree in a region of Palestine.
