2 ANCIENT GREECE BY: Alissa Ordway, Leonor Arce, Beam Saenpoch, and Nalani Lambert. By: Alissa Ordway

3 SETTING  Most mountainous parts of Greece are in the Northwest.  Greeks built temples for their gods to honor them.  Every place in Greek is less than 40 miles from the sea.  There were many small islands in Greece.  There was lots of soil in Ancient Greece but it wasn’t good for planting things.  By: Beam

4 FOOD, CLOTHING, SHELTER  When breakfast came, the Greeks filled themselves with bread soaked in wine with a few olives and figs.  Women dressed themselves in long dress-like robes called “chitins”, while men wore a tunic and the poor wore a simple long piece of cloth to cover themselves.  Homes were made by sun-baked mud and a balcony that faces all directions so that they always face the sun in Winter. 5 SOCIAL GROUPINGS  Society in Greece was mainly broken up between Free people and Slaves.  Free men were broken between Citizens and Metics.  Metics couldn’t own land or houses, but citizens could.  Women were not allowed to take part in public life.  Male citizens had the most rights out of everyone else. 6 TECHNOLOGY  The ancient Greeks first made fish baskets with bark and sticks, to help them fish.  The ancient Greeks used string, sticks, and bark to make a fishing pole.  They made helmets used for battle with metal and feathers.  They made spears by getting a branch and carving it into thin pole, and they chipped a rock into a triangle for the tip of a spear. 7 ECONOMIC SYSTEMS  Athenian silver coins were the most common coins in Ancient Greece.  They were stamped with an owl on one side and the goddess Athena on the other side.  Greeks sea traded with foreign lands to get goods.  Not only did they trade food and metal, but they also traded slaves.  Before using coins, Greeks traded goods by using the barter system, in which goods were exchanged for other goods of the same value.  Greeks began using coins in 600 B.C.E. 8 POLITICAL ORGANIZATION  Ancient Greeks kings led groups of families to new land and organized there military so they can defend them selves.  Ancient Greek kings have limited power, but the kings are generals and judges for Ancient Greece.  Ancient Greeks was first ruled by chieftains or wealthy villagers.  The Ancient Greeks government are called Monarch. 9 RELIGION The Greeks loved to show the gods how important they are to them. To show their importance they built temples in every single town in Greece for each god and goddess. These temples were not modern places to worship. It was especially not made parties and affairs were held outside the temple. Ordinary people to come and pray. They were homes for the statues of the gods or goddesses, which were cared by priests. Religious ceremonies, festivals, and many other parties and affairs were held outside of the temples. 10 THE GODS The ancient Greeks worshiped many gods. Some of them are:  Zeus- Zeus is the head of the gods. He has the most powerful weapon, the Lightning bolt. When lightning struck the Earth, the people believed that Zeus was present.  Hera: Hera was the wife of Zeus. She is the goddess of wedding and marriage.  Athena: Athena is the goddess of war and cunning wisdom. She is also the goddess of pot- making and wool-working. She invented the chariot, the bridle and built the first ship.  Demeter: She is the goddess of fertility and agriculture.  Apollo: Apollo is the god of sun, truth, music, and poetry, dance and healing. 11 PHILOSOPHY The Greeks believed that their gods particularly loved to see strong, fit graceful human bodies. The Greeks believed that all of the gods controlled everything in their lives. There was a for each aspect in the people’s lives. It was important to them to please the gods and goddesses. Happy gods would help you but furious gods punished you. The people had special places to worship in each of there houses. There were also public statues to worship. The Greeks believed that all the gods and goddesses they were a family like a real family on Earth. Even though they argued, they still looked after each other. By: Nalani

12 COMMUNICATION There languages were:  Aeolic  Doric  Ionic They also communicated by letter, smoke, drum beat, and mirror flashes. By: Nalani

13 AESTHETIC VALUES  Most pottery was decorated with pictures of the daily lives of Greeks.  When it came to painting, most were done on wood.  Most sculptures were decorated with brightly colored paints, but the skin of Gods/people were left as the natural color of stone. by: Leonor

14 RECREATION Because Greeks tend to turn things around and into an agon, which is a competition. This also meant that there were a lot of athletic competitions. The most famous competition held in Greece was The Olympics! They were also many other athletic games held in other places such as the Isthmian Games at Corinth. Greek boys played games that weren’t involved in the Olympics such as Field Hockey! The Greek girls threw balls. Greeks also played many games that are not as active such as Dice, Marbles, Knucklebones, and checkers. Nalani

15 RECREATION CONTINUED Here are some of the most famous sports played in Ancient Greece:  Hunting: Hunting was enjoyed by governmental communities. They slay bears, horses, and dogs. Lion hunting meant a sign of royalty and sport of nobility!  Aquatic Sports: One example of an aquatic sport is swimming. Swimming was used only as a way of training for other recreational sports.  Acrobatics: Acrobatics were very popular. It is known to entertain children!  Hoop: Children have their own games to play such as juggling, teeter-tots, swings, etc. One of the most popular games was hoop. Hoop was played on the streets in Greece. It was recommended by doctors as a healthy exercise for children. Hoop was made of iron, bronze or wood with small studs around the edge. It was designed specially so their parents could find them by the loud sound it makes.  By: Nalani
