Device to Augment Finger Movement in Stroke Patients Team 12 Tom Fleming, Mark Reagan, Tyler Vovos, Brad Rogers
2
Outline Background Client Requirements Design Problem Similar Products Design Phases Future Work
3
Project Background Variations in debilities among patients Brain Recovery –Blood flow scanning PET - Positron emission tomography MRI - Magnetic resonance imaging –Re-wiring Vs. Re-growth Project Goal –Augment movement Achieve average grip strength ~ 279 N –Smooth process of brain repair PET scan of the human brain http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Positron_ emission_tomography
4
Client Requirements Sense when opening or closing hand and augment this movement based on pressure Remove Easily Safety Feature: No Broken Fingers Affordable and convenient for all stroke patients Electric, hydraulic, or various other mechanical approaches
5
Design Problem Robotics: Hypothesized to improve recovery of strength and or dexterity. Glove or mitten design that senses and augment finger movements in stroke patients.
6
Similar Products HOWARD (Hand-Wrist Assisting Robotic Device) Starts: Finger is initially moved at least (1/10)” Goals: –Improve grasping and releasing –Improve range of hand and wrist motion Strictly for therapeutic use Difference: Used in Everyday life http://today.uci.edu/news/release_detail.asp?key=1569

Stepper Motor Electric Motor –Divides rotation into steps –Can rotate clockwise and counterclockwise Advantages –Low cost –Accurate with no recalibration Disadvantages –Vibration –More complicated
12
Microcontroller Mini computer Indexer BASIC Stamp Discovery Kit (BS2-IC) –Produce signal for motor
13
Sensor Liquid Pressure Sensor Noninvasive Sensor –Cuff attaches to hand Advantages –Reliable, quick, simple –Low Cost Disadvantages –Less accurate –Obstructs palm
14
Prototype Design Combines Stepper Motor, Microcontroller, Liquid Pressure Sensor Liquid Pressure Sensor Microcontroller Stepper Motor –1.8 degrees per step
15
Future Work Scope of Project Enhancements to be made –Mobility –Sensory input –Mechanical output –Size
