The Background Hand injuries account for 17% of all workday injuries.[1] The most common amputation of the upper extremities is the loss of one or more fingers.[2] Reasons for these amputations include cardiovascular disease, traumatic accidents, infection, tumors, nerve injury (trophic ulceration), and congenital anomalies. [1] [2]
3
Why? To help people and create freedom
To meet the needs of the disabled We are engineers
4
Mission Statement The purpose of this design project is to develop a coffee mug with attributes: such as, ease of use, cost efficiency, and durability by people with hand disabilities, specifically people with only one finger.
5
The MUG
6
Design Process Customer Needs Collection and Ranking User Friendly
We selected five first layer attributes that we felt the customer would want in a product User Friendly Able to use with only one finger Durable Simple Design Safe
7
Design Process Customer Needs Collection and Ranking Inexpensive
Within these first layer attributes, we found second layer attributes that would be pleasing to a customer User Friendly Inexpensive Simple to Use Lock Tight Lid Ambidextrous Design
8
Design Process Able to use with only one finger
No strain on joints or muscles Single round handle for finger Clamps to grab around the palm Simple trigger to pull clamps
9
Design Process Durable Plastic with Insulation Trigger works well
Trigger is efficient Simple Design Solid Color Lightweight Flat Base
10
Design Process Safe Insulation No sharp edges Aerator Grips
11
Design Process Second Layer Attributes: USER FRIENDLY
12
CAN USE WITH ONLY ONE FINGER
Design Process CAN USE WITH ONLY ONE FINGER
13
Design Process DURABLE
14
Design Process SAFE
15
Design Process SIMPLE DESIGN
16
Design Process Concept Generation based on Customer Needs Handle
Outside design Material Insulation
17
Design Process Concept Selection Good ideas and Bad ideas
Ex. Original trigger idea (“Josh’s Big Failure”) What worked and what didn’t Had to become one with our inner one-fingered persona
18
Design Process Concept Selection
The concept selection process consisted of the members of our group trying to determine what the most important attributes were to include in the final product
19
Design Process We spent hours in deep thought
20
Design Process We spent hours reading literature on other designs
21
Design Process And after the long process of determining what to leave in, we came up with different combinations of the attributes that we believed were the best
22
Design Process Concept Selection
Adjustable, single-finger handle to fit all sizes Vertical adjustability Outside brace Plastic, interior filling to prevent splashing Insulated to retain heat but not burn the hand Lock tight lid to prevent spillage
23
Design Process Prototype and Testing Used clay to prototype mug
Clay vs Ceramic vs Plastic vs Metal Easy-to-use Universal
24
Design Conclusion & Summary
Difficulties Patents Clay prototype Confounding variables Original design that is practical Choosing the best design
25
Design Conclusion & Summary
What we learned from this project? Prototype and solidworks model Customer needs ranking (prioritizing) Confounding variables Importance of process Originality Innovation requires patience
26
Conclusion Best design
Allows physically disabled individuals to drink coffee with ease No costly aspects of the mug Fits all users Safe
