1 New Staff Orientation Kay Carlisi Instructional Computing Coordinator

2 Your Employee Computer Account  Needed for logon to any computer on Main Campus  Access your e-mail on campus (with Outlook) or from the Web (mail.flcc.edu)  File storage on a secure server (Main Campus only) – Drive U:  Special LAN access rights for teaching faculty (Drive S:) or other shared folders

3 Where to Store Your Files  On your U: drive –Secure and backed up. –You can retrieve deleted files or prior versions. –You can access files from any computer on Main Campus.  Faculty office computers have a D: drive for extra storage on your local computer. –D: is NOT secure. Anyone who logs on to your computer has full access. –Files on D: are available only in your office. –You must back up important files yourself. –In computer labs, files on D: are deleted when you log off.

4 Where NOT to Store Your Files  In faculty offices, never store files on drive C: or on the desktop.  Everything on C: (including the Desktop) will be deleted if I reload your software due to a drive failure or software upgrade, but I will leave drive D: intact (unless the whole disk has died).

5 Where to Store Files For Students  Online course materials on the Web –WebCt classes (lessons, grades, quizzes). –PAWS web page (post only). –SLN courses. Requires Notes client for authoring.  Materials available on campus LAN –S: drive – faculty can store files, students can read or copy them. NOT secure – all faculty have full rights to all files on S: –I: drive – software and supporting files. G: drive – graphics and videos anyone can read or copy. –You must ask Kay to put things on I: or G:

6 File storage at extension sites  Geneva and Newark cannot connect to the Employee domain.  You logon using a “common” logon as gvastaff or nwkstaff or extfac on the site’s domain.  Read your e-mail on the web.  Each site has its own G: I: and S: drives.  The user extfac may store on the site’s S: drive – copy your files from removable storage or e-mail attachments.  Ask Kay for details (the site office has passwords).
