DG AGRI, Sheep & Goat Meat AG – 30 May 2012 25 Conclusions Negative Fragile consumption. High price and difficult financial situation of consumers coincide. In some countries, however, sheep meat consumption increased (IE). Decreasing flock in Spain: -1.5 mio animals in 2011, -5 mio since 2007 and the trend continues. High feed cost affecting especially the Southern MS. Positive High price allowing for some stability in the sector, the total flock in many MS is stable or growing. Due to the overall economic situation and high unemployment more young people are moving to sheep farming. The Schmallenberg virus has not had a major impact on the sector.
