3 Words I need to know Exoskeleton: the hard outer shell on an insect’s body Chitin: the material that makes up the hard outer shell or the exoskeleton of an insect body Thorax: the middle part of an insect’s body Abdomen: the rear part of an insect’s body Mandibles: mouth of an ant used to carry and break down food.

4 Insects’ Body Parts There are three main body parts: Head Thorax Abdomen

5 Song about insect traits The song is sung to the tune of Heads, “Shoulder, Knees and Toes”. Head, Thorax, Abdomen, Abdomen. Head, Thorax, Abdomen, Abdomen. Big Eyes, Six Legs, Two Antennae on your head.

7 Directions Color the head thorax and abdomen of the insect. In your best handwriting write the body parts of the insect on the strips of paper. Antenna, head, thorax, legs, abdomen, and name Use your scraps to make an antennae and six legs. Finally glue them pieces together.

8 Questions How many legs does my ant need? What does an exoskeleton mean? What are the characteristics of an insect? How many body parts does an insect have?
