a. Wings – contain scales full of pigment, provide color - scales “dust” that easily detaches to escape predators - used to determine sex: females have two spots males have one spot male forewing hindwing female b. Legs – [claw-like] enable butterfly to cling to perch - contain hair-like structures, used for tasting

Abdomen: consists of 10 segments, houses
most organs of circulatory, respiratory, reproductive system a. Spiracles- tiny holes located on side of abdomen used for exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide [6-7 pairs] b. Heart- muscular tube extends length of abdomen dorsally, pumps blood toward head *open circulatory system- all internal organs bathed in blood *Females abdomen larger to house eggs
