3 Trust is extremely low; Prejudice is unacceptably high; Substantial economic, education and heath gap WITHOUT THE RIGHT ‘ENVIRONMENT’, PROGRESS ON CLOSING THE GAP TARGETS WILL CONTINUE TO BE SLOW Governments across Australia spend $25billion each year on programs aimed at closing the gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. There has been some movement, but progress is very slow. Reconciliation is about changing this context; laying the foundations WHY IS RECONCILIATION IMPORTANT?

7 A SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE FRAMEWORK FOR ACTION Respect Pride in the cultures that have existed in this country for tens of thousands of years and the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to Australia’s development. Opportunity Creating opportunities that will achieve equality in life expectancy, education, employment and all the important, measurable areas of disadvantage. Relationships Good relationships are based on trust, understanding, communication and mutual respect.

8 RAPs ARE DRIVING SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CHANGE There are 480 organisations with RAPs with more than 2 million employees or students Employment 25, 044 jobs pledged: 18, 972 filled Indigenous Business $58 million spent with accredited Indigenous businesses Education $14.7 million provided for education scholarships Pro-bono $15.1 million worth of services provided to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations Cultural competency 213, 446 employees will undertake cultural competency training Relationships Respect Opportunities

9 AND HAVING A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIOUR Relationships Respect Opportunities People in RAP organisations… Contact …have more frequent contact with Indigenous people (66 per cent vs. 41 per cent general population) Pride …feel prouder of Indigenous cultures (77 per cent vs. 51 per cent general population) Prejudice …are less prejudiced (9 per cent vs.70 per cent general population) Trust …have higher levels of trust (71 per cent vs. 13 per cent general population)
