The House-Church movement has an agenda to transform worship  More relaxed  Not required  More social

The Bible teaches us differently  Decent & orderly, 1 Cor. 14:40  Required, Heb. 10:24, 25  Non-social, 1 Cor. 11:22

“For the early Christians, the Lord’s Supper was a festive communal meal. The mood was one of celebration and joy ….The Lord’s Supper was essentially a Christian banquet.”

No support in NT for a “Christian banquet”  Instituted with somber words, Mt. 26:26-29  Mood of sorrow, Mk. 14:18-25  Paul rebuked “festive” attitude, 1 Cor. 11:17-21

Should we be happy during the Lord’s Supper? 1 Cor. 11:23-29  Thankful for Christ’s sacrifice  Joyful in His resurrection  Anticipation of His return  Sorrowful that our sins put Him on the cross

“…the most universally-overlooked feature of the Lord’s Supper as practiced in the primitive church is that…it was observed in conjunction with a fellowship meal.”

Paul spoke directly against this, 1 Cor. 11:22-34

“Here is where one must be careful not to be thrown off track by Paul’s ensuing question: ‘Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in?’ …Nor by his concluding line: ‘If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment’ …Far from prohibiting a fellowship meal…”

In other words, ignore the apostle!  Bad as Baptists denying the necessity of baptism, Acts 2:38  Belly-god, Phil. 3:18, 19  Man of sin, 2 Thes. 2:3, 4

“...on the occasion of its inaugural introduction —there in the upper room on the night Jesus was betrayed— the memorial was part of an actual meal…”

It was the Passover meal…apply all?  Lamb, Ex. 12:3, 4  Blood on doorway, Ex. 12:7  Roasted, unleavened bread, bitter herbs, Ex. 12:8  Head, legs, entrails, Ex. 12:9  Burn leftovers, Ex. 12:10  Ready to go, Ex. 12:11

“The Lord’s Supper gave meaning to their table fellowship, and their table fellowship gave meaning to the Lord’s Supper.”

Arrogant, self-centered will worship, Col. 2:16-23  Discern the Lord’s body, 1 Cor. 11:23-29  The Lord’s sacrifice gives it meaning, Mt. 26:26-29  Haughty, 2 Tim. 3:1-5
