Biology 101 A Unit 2 A Day Three: Intro to Biochemistry

Before class starts: Get out your notebook Open to your Unit 2A assignment sheet Locate your Lewis Structure worksheet from yesterday Turn in All in the Shape activity (#12)

Today’s Topic Making & Breaking Macromolecules

Intro to Molecules Molecules-smallest parts of compounds Compounds with the same chemical formula, but different structures are called isomers

What is a Macromolecule? Macromolecule: extremely large molecules Ex: proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates Also called polymers made up of monomers

How do you make a macromolecule? Dehydration synthesis: when a monomer is added to a chain, a water molecule is removed

How do you Break macromolecules? Hydrolysis: reverse of dehydration synthesis Splits monomers by adding water in between them

Look at your assignment sheet for your group # for Macromolecules Groups 1 and 2 Report to lab area and complete the Dehydration Synthesis Gizmo on explorelearning.com Group 3 Complete the Dehydration synthesis cut out activity with a partner in the table area

Quiz 1 1.A __ reaction involves the addition of water. a. dehydration b. hydrolysis c. polar 2. A polymer is made up of ___. a. monomers b. trionomers c. pentonomers 3. The ___ group is made up of OH. a. carbonyl b. carboxyl c. hydroxyl 4. The ___ group is made up of COOH. a. carbonyl b. carboxyl c. hydoxyl 5. When compounds have the same formula, but different structures they are ___. a. clones b. isomers c. isotopes
