Militarism Complete love of the military. A belief that war is the best way to solve problems. A belief that humans are at their best when they are making war. –Naval Strength was significant at the time. –Arms race / competition –Fight to solve problems

Alliances When nations promise to help or defend each other in time of war. –Groups of friendly countries form –Group v group = big conflict

Imperialism When nations conquer other nations and make them colonies or annex them. –Desire to expand –Competition for colonies

Nationalism Great pride in your own nation (patriotism), but also prejudice or hatred against the people and way of life of other nations. –Wanting independence (own country) –Pride –Superiority –Unification

Look for Causes of World War One in the background Reading. Where is evidence of underlying causes? What was the immediate cause?

Instructions Form a circle with your color group. Rotate the Documents amongst your group members, so that you each have a chance to examine each document. Individually, record a summary of the main points of each document, and indicate what cause you think the document represents. As a group, discuss the causes and come to a conclusion about what cause you think each document represents.
