H.W due Thursday Review of WWI How did M.A.I.N cause WWI? Name 1 other major event that caused Europe to rush to war How did the U.S. get dragged into WWI? Discuss 2 reasons why the U.S. eventually sided with the Allies.

How to take Cornell Notes

Summarize. Write a summary of the main ideas in the bottom section. Study your notes. Re-read your notes in the right column. Spend most of your time studying the ideas in the left column and the summary at the bottom. These are the most important ideas and will probably include most of the information that you will be tested on.

On the Home front -Our factories, military strength were not up to par
-We were not ready for WWI -Our factories, military strength were not up to par -Sacrifice would be the only way -Men would enlist or be drafted -Women would do “men’s jobs” -Victory Gardens would be planted -War Bonds would be bought and sold

“Every scout to save a soldier” was the motto for both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts
They did their part and recycled and sold war bonds Artists were hired to create posters promoting patriotism and propaganda for the war effort

Total War War Industries Board was created to oversee nation’s production of weapons War Trade Board was created to oversee foreign trade and punish those who did business with the Central Powers National War Labor Board-made sure labor issues would not get out of hand (strikes)/also set wages, hours and working conditions

Congress passed the Lever Food and Drug Act in 1917-gave the President power to control production of war related industry Government regulated food consumption-voluntary restraint People would limit waste and consumption (Self rationing) What would we ration today if there was another World War? Why?

Public Opinion Wilson created the Committee on Public Information (CPI) to “sell” the war Created to help sway public opinion to support the war effort 4 minute speeches were delivered by some 75,000 speakers across the nation Propaganda was used heavily In addition, the Espionage and Sedition Acts were passed Illegal to speak against war/aid enemy

Schenk v. United States Clear and present danger was established which limited free speech during times of war. Over 2,000 people were jailed or deported during WWI

Selective Service Act In 1917, the US only had around 200,000 troops!
Congress created the Selective Service Act All men between had to register for a draft Lottery determined who would be drafted Not all men were drafted-about 2 million volunteered /2.8 million drafted

The Clean Plate Club Future President Herbert Hoover was put in charge of the Food Administration He relied on women to spread his message Do not waste food, limit sugar and meats, breads and “no second helpings” Gasless Days-Daylight Savings Time created to save fuel

African Americans began to arrive in Northern Factories The “Great Migration “ began in 1915 Over 500,000 African Americans left the South in hopes of better wages and treatment Changed the demographics of cities Brought new music to the North (jazz) Helped the war effort

End of WWI November 11, 1918 U.S. wanted “Peace without victory”
Our allies wanted to punish Wilson knew that punishing Germany would cause another war Wilson came up with the 14 Points It was a plan for Peace with honor The "Spanish" influenza pandemic of 1918–1919, which caused about 50 million deaths worldwide! Killed 650,000 Americans 43,000 servicemen were killed by the Influenza Occurs only a few times per century, last seen in 1918, 1957 and 1968

14 Points Peace with Honor-rested on 5 key principles
1)Self Determination-This led to the formation of Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia out of A.H 2) “Peace without victory”-Peace settlement should not punish 3) Disarmament-Nations should disarm and end militarism 4) Fair treatment of colonial peoples 5)Establish a League of Nations-An international organization that could settle nation to nation disputes-peacefully

Set reparation damage at 33 billion! Returned Alsace-Lorraine to France Gave other territories to Belgium, Denmark and Poland All colonies taken over by Allied nations Restricted German army to 100,000 Forbade manufacture of military equipment Demilitarized the Rhineland
