8 Mutual Defense Alliances- Austria-Hungary Declares War on Serbia Gavrilo Princip (Serbia) assassinated Franz Ferdinand (Austria-Hungary)-June 28, 1914 Austria-Hungary delivers July Ultimatum  July 23, 1914  Provoked a long and coming war War is declared on July 28,1914

9 Chain of Events 1. Russia gets involved to protect Serbia-July 29- December 9 2. August 1, 1914- Germany declares war on Russia to protect Austria-Hungary 3. August 3, 1914- France enters the war to fight Germany and Austria-Hungary 4. August 4, 1914- Germany attacks France through Belgium (neutral) causing Great Britain to declare war.

19 Nationalism Being a strong supporter of the rights and interests of one’s country Slavic people in Bosnia wanted to be part of Serbia instead of Austria-Hungary In other countries, strong nationalism contributed to the beginning and extension of the war
