LONG: Laboratories Over Next Generation Networks. Presentation Index l WP4 Context. l Experiments. l Trials.

LONG: Laboratories Over Next Generation Networks. Objectives l Identify trials and experiments to provide feedback on the functionality and performance of the network. l Perform trials and experiments, performing measurements and collecting data during each experiment. l Provide guidelines on network configuration and design, based on the analysis of the processed data.

LONG: Laboratories Over Next Generation Networks. Experiments: Measurement Tool l MGEN porting to IPv6 (WP3 activity) n MGEN is a traffic generator/analysis tool n Extensively used for throughput, latency and jitter measurement in WP4 n Allow IPv6 addresses, source address selection n Header generation n Routing Header n Hop-by-Hop Options Header –Router Alert option –Jumbo Payload option n Destination Option Header –Mobility: Home Address option, Binding Update, Binding Acknowledgement, Binding Request n Flow label and TOS n IPv6 multicast n ICMPv6 packet generation

LONG: Laboratories Over Next Generation Networks. Experiments: Performance Measurement Methodology Developed a methodology for performance measurement l Main results: throughput, delay, jitter. l Tools: MGEN6 (UDP), Netperf (TCP). l Parameters to vary for each test. n Sending rate. n Packet size. The methodology can be found in D4.1 l Reference tests for allow comparison. l Example of result: (Mean throughput versus sending rate for different packet sizes for a 6to4 tunnel between two Cisco routers).

LONG: Laboratories Over Next Generation Networks. Results from First Phase Trials l Performance evaluation trials on n Transition mechanism implementations. n Access and transport technology equipment. l Performed locally by each partner. l Based on available equipment (Cisco, FreeBSD, Linux, Windows). l Large set of tests: n Roughly, about 45 different configurations. n On each one, n 20 MGEN tests with different sending speeds, 6 different packet sizes. n Netperf testing. n ¡More than 5000 individual tests! Test specifications can be found in D4.1 Test results can be found in D4.2

LONG: Laboratories Over Next Generation Networks. Results from First Phase Trials l Transition mechanisms can be deployed in a network without high performance lost. n The most relevant parameter is packet size. n The use of transition mechanisms is only relevant for small packet sizes.

LONG: Laboratories Over Next Generation Networks. Second Phase Trials l Testing: n Advanced network services. n Advanced application services. l Functional and performance tests. l Transition mechanisms considered. n Aim: develop the most appropriate architecture for the deployment of each service. l Distributed experiences using the LONG network. n Also local experiences for more exhaustive tests. l Current status: Tests were proposed on D4.3. n Executing tests. The proposal for the Second Phase Trials can be found in D4.3
