Sample BODY DEVELOPMENT

TITLE Title: Topic of the Essay Should be general enough to encompass the idea of the essay.

Exploration Challenges Throughout human history, the physical universe has often presented dangers to explorers. Nevertheless, were the risks worth the rewards? For example, when primitive humans left their tribal villages to search for food and water, they risked death or injury from dangerous animals. Later, when people sailed the oceans in search of new lands for settlement or trade, many died in terrible storms. The ocean of outer space has several unique challenges for explorers including being a vacuum, being strewn with meteors and having scarce sources of water. Attention Getter or Hook Title Question Statistic Example, or Quote Explain Statistic, Example or Quote THESIS

Body Paragraph Body Paragraph 1 TOPIC SENTENCE (Write the controlling sentence of the paragraph based on the THESIS) MAIN IDEA OF THE PARAGRAPH/ MAJOR DETAIL Definition (Define the topic sentence) MINOR DETAIL Detail/Example/Reason (Provide further detail/examples/reasons about the definition) Explain Example (Explain the reason for the example) Transition (Develop a transition that takes the reader to the next topic)

Body 1 One of the challenges that are unique to space is the fact that space is a vacuum, which is a risk for various reasons. First, in a vacuum there is no atmosphere and therefore no air pressure. Without air pressure, the human body has no oxygen to sustain itself. After too many minutes without oxygen, a person would lose consciousness and eventually die. Also, in a vacuum a person's blood will gradually begin to boil. Finally, without an atmosphere, the rays of the Sun can cause radiation poisoning. TOPIC SENTENCE Definition Detail/Example /Reason Explain Example Transition
