French and Indian War Why did Britain and France fight in North America? They were rival colonial empires. The French wanted to keep the English colonist from settling in the Ohio Valley and interfering with their fur trade with the tribes. Why did the colonists fight? They mainly fought to protect their frontier settlements from attacks by French backed tribes and to gain land for settlement in the Ohio Valley. Why were the Indians fighting? They were fighting to protect their lands from colonial settlement. Most of the tribes preferred to maintain their relations with the French.

Winners What did the British gain? All the French territory from the Appalachian Mts to the Mississippi River and Canada. What did the British Colonists gain? Security and safety from French/Indian attacks. A new feeling of empowerment and capability. Trained colonial militia force.

Losers What did the French lose? All of their empire in North America. Pride self respect. What did Britain lose? The respect and trust of their colonists. What did the colonists lose? Right to settle in the Ohio Valley. loss of respect for British leadership What did the Indian tribes lose? The protection of the French from British Colonial expansion.
