“Operation Lion Heart”

What is “Operation Lion Heart”? ● Photographed by Deanne Fitzmaurice ● Taken during one of the most controversial conflicts in modern history- The Iraq War

What is “Operation Lion Heart”? ● Photo of a 9 year old Iraqi boy, injured by violent explosions in the war ● The boy was brought to Oakland, CA for dozens of life-and-death surgeries ● His courage lead the nurses to nickname him “Lion Heart”

What is “Operation Lion Heart”? ● Because of his nickname and strong, loving personality, nurses and doctors started the tradition of bringing him a new stuffed lion before every surgery, and left them by him throughout it

Intentions behind “Operation Lion Heart”?

● The author of this image was greatly upset by how everyone was concerned with what Iraq had done to America, how America was only doing what seemed necessary, and less concerned with how we were also hurting innocent people who were in no way involved, like this young boy

Intentions behind “Operation Lion Heart”? ● She hoped to prove a point, and force not only Americans, but the rest of the world to stop and think

Ethos, Logos, and Pathos in “Operation Lion Heart”?

● Ethos- when someone sees this image, they know that an act like this is wrong, they feel guilty, and want to stand up and take action

Ethos, Logos, and Pathos in “Operation Lion Heart”? ● Logos- logically, people understand the consequences of war, but they may have not realized things like this could happen to someone not involved, this may jump-start them to action

Ethos, Logos, and Pathos in “Operation Lion Heart”? ● Pathos- looking at the picture, people feel sad, and guilty because of the condition of this young boy. They want to help, and do anything to keep more things like this happening again

Techniques included in “Operation Lion Heart”?

● Black and white- creates a more somber, calmer, or sadder effect ● The stuffed lion in the back ground- ties in the symbolism of the title to the picture ● The look of the boys condition and facial expressions- triggers Ethos, Logos, Pathos appeals
