We can model lung tissue using indicator agar, and the oxygen in air using alkali. When ‘oxygen’ diffuses into ‘lung tissue’ its colour changes. Put an image under your petri dish to make model lungs. One lung is hollow and the other has separate air spaces, but the space in both lungs covers the same total area. L&K Academy 2 LungsSS2 1 Add ‘oxygen’ to the spaces on both sides at the same time and note what happens. 2 What difference would it make if lungs were hollow? 3 In real lungs, blood keeps carrying the oxygen away. How else is the model different from the real thing? Do the differences affect your conclusions? Modelling oxygen uptake Oxygen diffuses through lung tissue to get from the air to your blood. What difference would it make if your lungs were hollow? Put the picture under your dish to make model lungs. One lung is hollow. The other has separate air spaces, but the space in both lungs covers the same total area. The agar in this dish represents lung tissue. The alkali is the oxygen in air. ‘Oxygen’ makes the ‘tissue’ change colour. 1 Work with a partner. Fill every space with ‘oxygen’ at the same time. Then start the clock. 2 After 2 minutes, colour the diagram to show where the ‘oxygen’ has reached. 3 What difference would it make if our lungs had one giant airspace?
