Bridge Quest An exploration of what it takes to make a bridge. This is what we are going to learn: What resources are needed to make a bridge. How bridges work. What are the different types of bridges. What happens when a bridge fails. How bridge designs are chosen. How to design a truss of your own, using a computer program. Project: Bridge Busting Competition Build your own bridge and break it! This is what we are going to learn: What resources are needed to make a bridge. How bridges work. 4
How does a bridge work? Gravity pushes down and a bridge pushes back up! What happens when a bridge does not push back up as much as gravity pushes down?
5
Bridge Identification Worksheet What type of bridges are these?
6
Bridge Identification Worksheet Cont.
7
What are the differences between these two bridges?
8
How does a truss work? Uses triangles to form a ridged structure Dissipates the weight through the truss system
9
Forcing the Issue 2 Forces –Tension Pulling Force. –Compression Crushing Force Tries to bend and warp things..
10
Hollow Vs. Solid What is the main benefit of a hollow member as opposed to a solid member?
11
Is it important to keep the cost of our bridge down? How would this affect the construction and longevity of the bridge? Items to consider:
12
How can we keep the cost down? Less supports Smaller diameter tubing Hollow tubing?

Design a bridge over a nearby river capable of holding an 18-wheeler truck. Bridge design must flex but not break when a truck is driven over it. Your task:
14
How will you do this?
15
Some possible bridge designs:
19
How will we be graded?
21
Bridge Design Contest Bridge that costs the lowest to construct and will still hold an 18-wheeler will win an award. 2 nd and 3 rd place out of each class will be ranked accordingly
