16. Smoothing Plane While the smoothing plane can be used to plane the edges of long boards it is not the most effective tool as it tends to follow any curve on the board.

17. Try Plane The correct tool for squaring the edge of such a board is the Try Plane. The extra length allows the plane to bridge the curves and produces a much better result

19. Bull Nose Plane The Bull Nose Plane is one of the shortest planes in the workshop. The blade is set close to the nose of the plane. This allows you to use this plane to clean stopped rebate joints. Because this rebate is Stopped (it does not go right to the end of the wood) it would be extremely difficult to adjust with any other plane

20. Shoulder Plane The Shoulder plane can be used to trim the shoulders of tenons and to adjust the depth of a rebate. In the picture on the right the shoulder plane is being used to adjust the size of a rebate.

24. Spokeshave Spokshaves are in effect small planes that have flat or curved soles. Flat soled spokeshaves can be used to machine convex curves, Curved spokeshaves can be used to cut concave curves. The picture on the right shows a spokeshave being used to shape the back of a guitar neck
