Two World Views Choosing the best way

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful, a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical. And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily, joyfully, playfully watching me. But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible, logical, responsible, practical. And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable, clinical, intellectual, cynical. There are times when all the world's asleep, the questions run too deep for such a simple man. Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am. 5 “…the pattern of this world…” What, then, might, “…the pattern of this world…”, be? I’ve come to think of it in this way: What, then, might, “…the pattern of this world…”, be? I’ve come to think of it in this way:

“…the pattern of this world…” What might “…the pattern of this world…” be? I’ve come to think of it in this way: –Ownership and control Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Matthew 4:8-9 What might “…the pattern of this world…” be? I’ve come to think of it in this way: –Ownership and control Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Matthew 4:8-9

“…the pattern of this world…” What might “…the pattern of this world…” be? I’ve come to think of it in this way: –Ownership and control –Hierarchy and superiority Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Matthew 4:5-6 What might “…the pattern of this world…” be? I’ve come to think of it in this way: –Ownership and control –Hierarchy and superiority Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Matthew 4:5-6

“…the pattern of this world…” What might “…the pattern of this world…” be? I’ve come to think of it in this way: –Ownership and control –Hierarchy and superiority –Competition and winning “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.” Matthew 20:16 What might “…the pattern of this world…” be? I’ve come to think of it in this way: –Ownership and control –Hierarchy and superiority –Competition and winning “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.” Matthew 20:16

“…the most excellent way.” If this is the way it is, what might the alternative be? I’ve come to think of it in this way: If this is the way it is, what might the alternative be? I’ve come to think of it in this way:

“…the most excellent way.” If this is the way it is, what is the alternative? I’ve come to think of it in this way: –Stewardship and sharing Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross! Philippians 2:5-8 If this is the way it is, what is the alternative? I’ve come to think of it in this way: –Stewardship and sharing Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 11 “…the most excellent way.” If this is the way it is, what is the alternative? I’ve come to think of it in this way: –Stewardship and sharing –Egalitarianism and unity There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galations 3:28 If this is the way it is, what is the alternative? I’ve come to think of it in this way: –Stewardship and sharing –Egalitarianism and unity There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galations 3:28

“…the most excellent way.” If this is the way it is, what is the alternative? I’ve come to think of it in this way: –Stewardship and sharing –Egalitarianism and unity –Cooperation and compassion “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. Matthew 23:37 If this is the way it is, what is the alternative? I’ve come to think of it in this way: –Stewardship and sharing –Egalitarianism and unity –Cooperation and compassion “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. 14 If what I have just presented is true, then the philosophical underpinnings of why we do what we do will be purposely built on these values:

a model for us to use: Underlying values: sharing equality cooperation - why we teach -

Extending out from these values will be the methods we use put them into practice As teachers we call it, “The Curriculum” Extending out from these values will be the methods we use put them into practice As teachers we call it, “The Curriculum”

The methods - principles - we use these to put these underlying values into practice is the curriculum - what we teach -

How we present what we teach in our classrooms is our teaching practice, or pedagogy. This, too, must be consistent with the underlying values if the program we offer as teachers can be termed, “authentic”. 19 How -practice - we put these underlying values into practice - how we teach - How -practice - we put these underlying values into practice - how we teach -

Each overlays the other, building to the place where what we say we do is actually what we are doing - –we practice what we preach. Each overlays the other, building to the place where what we say we do is actually what we are doing - –we practice what we preach.

where to from here? We need to cross-check the underlying values of what we currently do with what we have agreed are the values we should build on - our world view We then need to change what we do - the curriculum - so that it is consistent with these values And finally we need to ensure that the way we are teaching, our pedagogy, is in congruence with these values We need to cross-check the underlying values of what we currently do with what we have agreed are the values we should build on - our world view We then need to change what we do - the curriculum - so that it is consistent with these values And finally we need to ensure that the way we are teaching, our pedagogy, is in congruence with these values
