2 Imperialism & Colonialism: 1870-1914 Objective: To recognized and assess how European imperialism and colonization changed the culture and political, economic and cultural nature of nations in Asia, SE Asia and Africa.

3 Imperialism: a strong nation takes over a weaker nation or region and dominates its economic, political, or cultural life. Colonialism or direct control Colonizing countries annex territory outright 1875-1902 Nations of Euro. Colonize 90% of Africa! Results of industrialization, liberal revolutions, & rise of nation-states Colonies provide necessary source for raw materials

4 Causes of Imperialism Economic Motives The Industrial Revolution created an insatiable demand for raw materials and new markets. Nationalism European nations wanted to demonstrate their power and prestige to the world. Balance of Power European nations were forced to acquire new colonies to achieve a balance of power with their neighbors and competitors. White Man's Burden The Europeans’ sense of superiority made them feel obligated to “civilize the heathen savages” they encountered. Famous writing Rudyard Kipling “White Man’s Burden”
