6 I MPORTANT POINTS IN THE HISTORY OF THE T OWER OF L ONDON 1070s - beginning of building by William the Conqueror - primary function was a fortress and only temporary royal residence 1210 - Royal Menagerie (královský zvěřinec) was established Edward I (1307 – 27) - started to use the Tower as a prison 1780 – last hanging 1841 - Crown Jewels were saved from fire today – Museum and the Royal Jewel Case

7 Yeomen Warders are wrongly called Beefeaters. This nick- name came from their lunch breaks when they did not work and ate beef meat. The Tower of London has been watched by Yeomen Warders since its existence in 1078. The Warders take care of the buildings, making sure that all are kept safe from intruders /nezvaní hosté/ as well as watched that none of the prisoners escaped. Today they also look after the museum and the ravens. Every night before 10 pm there is a “Key Ceremony” – locking the castle – for 700 years every single night without any change.
