2 The Middle Ages 476-1000 AD AKA Dark Ages Hard Life Feudal System Knights, kings, like Robin Hood Plain Food * Clothes were coarse and uncomfortable (flax and wool)* Houses/furniture put together crudely* Many people couldn’t read or write Bible was #1 along with all Holy Places*

5 Crusades 11 th Century Pilgrimages to Palestine- Holy Land War-like Turks ruled the holy land and used churches for stables-Moslems Stopped pilgrimages and began the 200 years War Kings were angry- THIS MEANS WAR!!!

7 Result of Crusades Christian people loved seeing the beautiful buildings Shopped in the marketplaces of Constantinople. Bought- silk,teas, woven cottons, spices* Saw pearls, gems, rubies, other precious stones* Ate yummy spicy food from East Indies* Tea from China and wine from Arabia Rugs and Carpets from Arabia

9 Seeing the Good Life Christians came back to Europe wanting MORE GOOD STUFF. Out with the bland food and scratchy clothing in with the Fancy Stuff! I WANT MORE!

Dias-sailed further down south coast of Africa, stormy seas, reached southern tip – Cape of Storms King John changed to Cape of Good Hope- thought storms would scare sailors Pillar of stone (place a stone for as far as you travel….

17 COLUMBUS’ Voyage begins…. Left from Spain King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella supported his dream Town of Palos supplied his ship and then was punished for helping him. They smuggled goods. Santa Maria and Pinta was stolen. 88 seamen were forced on the ship across the Sea of Darkness.
